The Sussex estate, for sale for £4.75m, was owned jointly by Sir Tom and Engelbert Humperdinck in their early sixties pomp – and seems to have been a kind of roistering retreat where the duo could, in the modern idiom, “party”.
It is, dear reader, one of those houses for which the loss of your right arm or perhaps a child would be but a tiny price; for if your great passion is heavily beamed, rambling Sussex piles, this will seduce you in seconds. Just, enthusiastic viewer, please refrain from ripping off your knickers and hurling them at the nice man from Knight Frank as if he were Sir Tom; the up-market estate agent that is flogging the pad just doesn’t go in for that sort of thing.
Anyway, while neither of the singers lived here full time, Stocknersh Manor became a discreet retreat where the two could throw lavish bashes at weekends. The crooners later fell out – over a woman, inevitably – and have not spoken for two decades, but back then shared a similar social circle that included Janice Joplin, Barbara Eden and Jean Shrimpton.
You can almost see Sir Tom arriving on a Friday night in his white Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, gravel flying to the winds, and a veritable harem of mini-skirts squealing with friskiness as they clambered out.
